Prep: Before Your Appointment
What to wear to a spray tan (and after)
10 min read
The short answer to what to wear to a spray tan: loose, dark, breathable clothing (an oversized dress, joggers, a button-front shirt) with sandals instead of sneakers. Skip tight leggings, snug bra bands, socks with elastic tops, and jewelry. What you wear matters for roughly the first 8 to 12 hours after your appointment, and then it stops mattering almost entirely.
That window is the whole story. At Sunkiss Studios in Falls Church, your artist blends your formula, sprays it by hand, and sets it with a finishing powder so you leave dry, but the color underneath is still building. Clothing is the one variable you control after you walk out the door, and it is a common reason an otherwise flawless tan comes out with a strap line across the shoulder.
Why what you wear matters at all
The active ingredient in every professional spray tan is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar-derived compound. It reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of dead skin cells, in a browning reaction that produces pigments called melanoidins. That reaction is not instant. It starts within an hour or two, keeps building for several hours, and is generally fully developed about 24 hours after application.
Two things follow from that. First, during those hours, anything pressed hard against your skin, anything wet, and anything that traps sweat can interfere with an even reaction. Second, the color lives in dead surface cells, so it leaves when those cells do. That is why a good custom tan reads as 7 to 10 days of even color followed by a gradual fade, not a hard stop.
The brown you see in the mirror on the way home is mostly cosmetic bronzer, a temporary guide color that lets your artist see every pass. That bronzer is what transfers to fabric. The DHA color underneath does not transfer at all.
It is worth being precise about that last point, because it settles most clothing anxiety. Once the reaction has run its course, the color is chemically bound inside cells you are already carrying. Your skin replaces those cells on its own schedule (the full epidermal cycle runs several weeks, and the tinted surface layer sheds over roughly a week), so nothing you put on afterward can lift the tan off. Friction and exfoliation can hurry the shedding along, which is a fading question, not a staining one.
What to wear to your appointment
| Moment | Wear | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| To the studio | Loose dark top and bottoms, sandals, hair tied back | Tight jeans, leggings, bras with a firm band, socks, jewelry |
| During the session | Old swimwear, underwear you do not love, or nothing | Anything you want to keep pristine |
| Home and developing | Oversized dark cotton, sandals, no waistband pressure | Sports bras, shapewear, wet weather without an umbrella |
| Overnight | Loose dark pajamas on dark sheets | Socks, fitted tees, silk or satin bedding |
| After your first rinse | Anything you want | Nothing to avoid — bronzer transfer is over |
Arrive with bare skin. No lotion, no deodorant, no oil, no perfume, no makeup. Every one of those sits between the solution and your skin and blocks DHA from reacting evenly. Deodorant residue is the classic cause of pale or slightly green underarms. Shower, exfoliate, and shave or wax well before the appointment rather than on the way. The full sequence lives in our spray tan prep guide.
Two details people forget. Jewelry needs to come off before you are sprayed, so leave the stacked rings and the necklace at home rather than juggling them at the studio. And if you are coming straight from work in a fitted suit or a pencil skirt, bring a change of clothes. A beautiful tan under a tight waistband for the drive to Tysons is how you get a pressure line across your hips.
What do you wear during the session?
This is the part first-timers worry about, and the answer is genuinely up to you. Common choices, and none of them is wrong:
- Nothing. The only way to get a truly seamless, tan-line-free result. Sunkiss Studios offers this as the Brazilian Tan, applied fully bare in a private suite by one artist with the door locked and disposables provided. It is its own session on the service menu rather than a wardrobe choice inside a Signature, so book it as the Brazilian Tan when that is the result you want.
- Underwear or old swimwear. Dark, well-worn, and something you would not mind staining with bronzer. Strings and thin straps leave less of a line than wide bands.
- A bra and bottoms you plan to wear all summer. If you always wear the same bikini, tanning in it gives you tan lines that match your real ones — a deliberate choice some clients want.
Whatever you wear will show up later as an untanned shape, so the practical rule is to match your coverage to the clothing you plan to be seen in. Strapless dress this weekend? Go strapless or bare. Nothing about that decision is permanent; it fades with the rest of the tan.
Your artist will also offer eye protection and nose filters. Use them. DHA is approved by the FDA for external application to the skin, but not for the eye area, lips, or mucous membranes, and it is not approved for inhalation — which is exactly why professional studios spray in a ventilated room and hand you a filter rather than shrugging it off.
What to wear home
Loose and dark, on every surface the solution touched. In practice that means:
- An oversized cotton dress, a big T-shirt, or joggers. Cotton breathes; synthetics trap the sweat that makes bronzer run.
- Sandals or slides. Sneakers and socks are the worst offenders on the whole list. The elastic top of a sock rubs bronzer off the ankle and leaves a visible band right where everyone looks in a summer dress.
- No bra if you can manage it, or the loosest one you own. A firm band under the bust and tight straps at the shoulder both leave marks.
- A hair tie, not a headband. Anything sitting tight on the hairline can disturb the blend at the temples.
In the DC metro this is a seasonal calculation. From June through September, the humidity here means the walk from the parking garage to your door can raise a light sweat, and sweat on a developing tan runs. Park close, keep the car air conditioning on, and change out of anything you drove in the moment you are home. In winter, the enemy flips: a wool coat over bare skin and a scarf across the neck can both scuff bronzer, so put a loose layer between your skin and your outerwear.
Keep an umbrella in the car regardless of the forecast. Rain drops on a developing tan can leave freckled marks, because water dilutes the solution before DHA has finished reacting.
Sunkiss Studios also travels across the DC metro for solo house calls and group parties. If your artist comes to you, the clothing rules are identical, with one addition. Clear about a 6-by-6-foot area near a standard outlet, whether that is a bedroom, a bathroom, or a corner of the living room. Your artist brings the pop-up tent, extraction fan, and floor protection, so the only thing to lay out is your outfit for afterward. Put it in the room you are being sprayed in, so you are not walking through the house looking for it.
What to wear to bed
If you booked a Signature Custom, your rinse window is 8 to 12 hours, which means you are sleeping in it. Loose dark pajamas on dark sheets. Not silk or satin — smooth fabrics slide against skin all night and drag bronzer with them. Cotton, one size up, is the right call. Skip socks entirely.
Your sheets may pick up some bronzer. This is normal, it is cosmetic, and in almost every case it washes out in a cold cycle with regular detergent. If you would rather it never happened, two options exist: book the Rapid Signature, which rinses in 2 to 4 hours so you shower before bed, or add clear solution to any session and develop with no cosmetic bronzer in the mix at all. Both are on the service menu with current pricing.
For the exact rinse timing by solution type, see when to shower after a spray tan.
What to wear after your first rinse
After that first brief, lukewarm, soap-free rinse, the transfer risk is essentially over. The bronzer is down the drain and the color you are left with is inside the top layer of your skin. You can wear white. You can wear the silk dress. You can put on the wedding gown.
Two soft rules for the rest of the week. Give tight waistbands and gym leggings a rest for the first full day, since friction is now the main way color comes off early. And remember that a spray tan gives you no sun protection whatsoever — zero SPF, at any depth — so what goes on over the tan outdoors is sunscreen, every time.
Does a spray tan stain clothes?
The cosmetic bronzer can mark fabric; the tan itself cannot. Practical guidance:
- Cotton and most synthetics: cold wash with regular detergent, and treat any visible mark before it sees a dryer, since heat sets what is left. Wash sooner rather than later.
- White cotton: usually fine on the same cold cycle, as long as it goes through the wash before it goes through the dryer.
- Silk, satin, leather, and suede: genuinely at risk. Do not wear them until after your first rinse.
- Light upholstery and pale car seats: put a dark towel down for the drive home.
If you have an event where the stakes are high, such as a white dress, a rented tux, or a client’s furniture, clear solution removes the variable entirely, because there is no bronzer to transfer.
Common mistakes
- Socks. Every time. The elastic band leaves a pale ring at the ankle.
- A sports bra straight from the gym. Work out before your appointment, not after.
- Skinny jeans for the drive home. Denim seams press into the backs of the knees and the hips.
- Shapewear under an event dress on tan day. Wear it the day after your rinse instead.
- Deodorant on the way to the studio. Blocks color in the exact spot people notice.
- Silk sheets. They slide, and they hold bronzer badly.
- Underestimating the weather. A Northern Virginia thunderstorm between the studio and your car will show up on your arms.
When to book around your outfit
Work backward from the moment you need to look your best, and give the tan a full development cycle plus a rinse.
- A wedding or a gala: book so that your first rinse is done and dry before you get dressed. For a Saturday evening reception in Arlington or DC, tan on Thursday, two days out, so the color is fully developed and your first rinse is behind you before the dress goes on. The full sequence, including the trial appointment, is in our spray tan before a wedding timeline.
- A flight or a beach week: one to two days before departure, so you travel fully developed rather than developing in an airplane seat.
- A photoshoot: the day before, so the color has settled and the bronzer is gone.
- A same-day event: the Rapid Signature exists for exactly this. Rinse in 2 to 4 hours and dress with time to spare.
When you book, tell your artist what you are wearing. A strapless gown, a backless dress, a competition suit, or a scrubs uniform each change the coverage decision, and that conversation takes thirty seconds at the start of your consultation. Questions, answered.
What should I wear to a spray tan appointment?
Wear loose, dark, breathable clothing — an oversized dress, joggers, a button-front shirt — and sandals rather than sneakers. Avoid tight leggings, snug bra bands, socks with elastic tops, and jewelry, all of which press lines into color that is still developing. Bring the same kind of outfit to change into afterward if you arrive from work, and leave anything white or delicate at home.
What do you actually wear during a spray tan?
You choose. Most clients wear old swimwear or underwear they do not mind staining, and plenty wear nothing at all for a seamless, tan-line-free result. Whatever you wear will show as an untanned shape, so pick the coverage that matches the clothing you plan to wear. At Sunkiss Studios your artist steps out while you change and works with the studio door closed.
Can I wear deodorant, lotion, or perfume to my appointment?
No. Deodorant, lotion, oil, perfume, and makeup all sit between the solution and your skin, and they block DHA from developing evenly — deodorant is the usual cause of pale or greenish underarms. Arrive showered, exfoliated, and completely bare. Sunkiss Studios applies a pH-balancing prep spray before your custom blend, but that corrects surface pH, not a full layer of product.
What if it is raining on the day of my spray tan?
Bring an umbrella and park close. Rain on a developing tan can leave freckled drip marks, because water dilutes the solution before DHA has finished reacting with your skin. In a DC-metro summer, an afternoon thunderstorm is the likeliest threat to a fresh tan. If you get caught out, pat the area dry immediately — do not rub — and tell your artist so touch-ups can be planned.
